MAWB

A Master Air Waybill (MAWB) is the primary transport document issued by an airline or its authorized agent for air cargo shipments. It acts as a contract of carriage between the shipper (or freight forwarder) and the carrier, covering the air transport of goods from the origin airport to the destination airport.

Key Functions:

1. Contract of Carriage: The MAWB serves as evidence of the agreement and terms between the carrier and the shipper or freight forwarder.
2. Receipt of Goods: It functions as a receipt, documenting that the carrier has received the goods in good condition for shipment by air.

Role in Air Freight Logistics:

• Documentation Flow: The MAWB is crucial for customs clearance and is required by both the origin and destination customs authorities.
• Consolidation Shipments: In consolidated shipments, the freight forwarder issues individual House Air Waybills (HAWBs) to each shipper, while the airline issues a single MAWB for the entire consolidated cargo.
• Cargo Tracking and Claims: The MAWB number is used for tracking shipments and is required when filing claims for loss or damage.
